How to keep the house cool in summer
Achieving cool air in the home during summer is important, not only for maintained comfort but to prevent heat-related stress or illness. Extreme temperatures can have a real impact on how we feel and function throughout our daily lives.
To adapt to rising temperatures in Australia, understand the most effective ways to cool your house for environmental control over your space. With insight from Evan Stevens, Head of Environmental Care at Dyson, we share tips on how to keep the house cool in summer.

How to cool a room down
At the peak of Australian summer, ceiling cavities can surpass temperatures of 70 degrees. For comfortability and health-quality across each room it’s vital to regulate the airflow of spaces and our natural temperature. How to cool down body temperature and other ways to reduce heat in the house are ahead.
1. Reduce electronic heat sources
Electronic devices used across the household can actually contribute to raised heat in a room. Take traditional lightbulbs – 90% of their energy generates heat, with only 10% being converted to light. To reduce household costs and room temperatures, as well as improve the sustainability efforts in the home, follow a two-pronged approach. Opt for energy efficient lights and make sure that your electronic devices are unplugged when not in use. In the kitchen, cooking can cause temperatures to rise too. Consider the heat when cooking and allow for natural airflow while doing so, to also reduce the level of pollutants being projected into the air.
2. Adjust room light
Sunlight exposure through windows can create a greenhouse effect – with up to 30% of heat gain accessing the home through windows. Additionally, UV radiation can permeate through glass, contributing to skin damage. To reduce exposure to the sun and the heat that comes with it, keep windows drawn throughout the day. External covers like awnings and shutters block heat more effectively than curtains or blinds. Inversely, outdoor temperatures drop at night – so take advantage of the cooler air by opening windows and doors to allow circulation through the house.
3. Implement cooling airflow
During summer, hot temperatures combine with pollutants to reduce comfortability alongside air quality in the home. The Air Multiplier™ technology built into Dyson’s range of air purifiers allow circulated airflow around the whole room2, with 350-degree oscillation. Polluted air is removed through HEPA standard filtration, trapping 99.95% of particles as small as 0.1 microns3. Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™ projects a powerful stream of purified air to cool you down. The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde™ can also trap formaldehyde, for even more powerful purification.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) suggests that external stressors like noise and temperature can affect the quality and quantity of sleep4. Our latest Dyson air purifiers project up to 290 litres of cooled air and are 20% quieter5, for peaceful nights.
4. Regulate body temperature naturally
The most effective ways to reduce heat in the house start with our own temperature. To help regulate your body heat, wear fabrics in summer that are breathable – opt for linen or cotton, whose fibres help to cool your body naturally, and avoid man-made materials like polyester. Summer bedding should be breathable too, so choose similarly natural materials. Spraying cool mist over your skin on extremely hot days also helps your body to work in the same way as an evaporative cooler.

Additional features of Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™
- Night-time mode: during sleep, our advanced purifier monitors air quality and cleans the air using the quietest settings and a dimmed display. This means that even light sleepers can rest comfortably without being disturbed.
- Air projection loop: this whole-machine filter can multiply airflow, generating powerful air circulation to cool you down whilst capturing volatile gases and ultrafine particles.
